🐾 Meet Bandit — A Gentle Senior Soul Looking for His Forever Home! 🐾

Bandit is an adorable 12-year-old Dachshund mix weighing 14 lbs. This sweet little gentleman has come such a long way in foster care, slowly learning that people can be kind, hands can be gentle, and a home can be a safe place. ❤️

Bandit isn’t looking for a busy life filled with adventures. His perfect world is peaceful and predictable, with a securely fenced yard to wander, soft music playing in the background, some canine companions nearby, and a patient human who will love him exactly as he is.

🐶 Other Dogs

Bandit gets along with dogs of all sizes, although he especially enjoys the company of dogs closer to his own size. He is friendly when meeting new dogs but generally doesn’t make a big fuss about them.

These days, he happily joins the other dogs in his foster home while his foster works in the office. He enjoys having companionship without needing to be the center of attention.

🐱 Cats

Cat friendly! Bandit currently lives with five cats and pays absolutely no attention to them. 😸

👧 Children

Bandit has not been around young children. Although he is an extremely laid-back gentleman, a home without young children would probably be best for his quiet personality.

He is good with older children who understand how to be calm, gentle, and respectful with a senior dog.

🌳 Walks, Yard & Mobility

Bandit isn’t a traditional walk-around-the-neighborhood kind of guy. He likes to move around at his own slow pace and prefers enjoying the sights and smells from the yard.

His favorite time of day is early morning, when he loves wandering around outside—especially when another dog or one of his humans joins him. 🌅

Bandit has mild arthritis and stiffness in his back legs, so stairs, steps, and high furniture can be challenging. Otherwise, his mobility is quite good. He prefers being carried to and from the car.

Bandit isn’t a runner, but he does like to wander, so a securely fenced yard is important for his forever home.

🏡 House Trained

Bandit is house trained! 🎉

He has had only one potty accident in his foster home, and that happened on his second day. His foster soon discovered that Bandit has his own adorable way of saying he needs to go out—he goes into a little “downward dog” pose and does a spin!

He also knows how to use a doggy door and will let himself in and out when needed.

🛏️ Crate & Sleeping

Bandit is not crate trained because he simply doesn’t need one.

His foster initially set up a crate with the door left open, and Bandit occasionally used it. But he quickly decided that under the bed is much better! 😄

At night, Bandit prefers sleeping in his dog bed or under the bed. He likes getting up for a drink of water during the night, and because getting on and off a human bed is difficult for him, staying safely on the floor works best.

🍽️ Mealtime

Bandit is not food aggressive, but this gentleman appreciates a little privacy while dining.

He doesn’t like being watched while he eats and prefers to eat by himself. Before starting his meal, he may spend several minutes adorably pretending to bury his food.

Bandit can also be a selective eater, so his foster keeps a variety of foods available to find something that meets his approval. Apparently, a senior gentleman has standards! ❤️

🚗 Car Rides

Car rides aren’t Bandit’s favorite activity. He’s usually okay for about the first five minutes, but then he becomes stressed and begins panting.

He doesn’t jump around or become difficult—he would simply rather stay home where he’s comfortable.

👋 Meeting People

Bandit generally shows little interest in new people. He isn’t shy or timid; he’s simply an independent little guy who doesn’t feel the need to greet everyone he meets.

He doesn’t seek out affection, but once he trusts you, he absolutely loves being gently stroked under his chin, on his neck, and across his chest while being told what a good boy he is. 🥹❤️

⛈️ Thunderstorms & Anxiety

Thunderstorms are Bandit’s biggest fear and can cause significant anxiety and panting.

He’s learned that being held during storms is safe. Gentle strokes on his neck and chest, combined with softly telling him he’s a good boy, help him settle and feel secure.

Interestingly, everyday loud noises don’t bother him at all. Vacuums, lawn mowers, car engines, and leaf blowers don’t faze him!

🔇 A Very Quiet Gentleman

If you’re looking for a dog who doesn’t have much to say, Bandit may be your guy!

In the months he’s been with his foster, he has barked only twice—once at the horses next door and once at a herd of deer. Even then, he gave just a couple of barks and decided his job was done. 😂

🎵 Being Home Alone

Bandit shows no separation anxiety and is perfectly comfortable being left alone.

He does enjoy having soft music playing, so his foster leaves some on to keep him company. 🎶

❤️ Bandit has a low-level heart murmur. He is not currently on medication for the murmur.

💊 Bandit has had a UTI that required a few courses of antibiotics to fully clear.

🦴 Bandit has mild arthritis in his hind legs, so stairs and steps may present a challenge for him. Per his veterinarian, jumping should be avoided—although Bandit doesn’t try to jump anyway. A home where he can comfortably stay on one level would be especially helpful for this sweet senior gentleman.

❤️ Bandit’s Story

When Bandit first arrived in foster care, he was completely shut down. For the first four or five weeks, he barely came out from under the bed. He showed little interest in being touched or even spoken to gently.

But his foster gave him something incredibly important: time.

Slowly, Bandit began to understand that humans could be loving and caring. Little by little, he started coming out of his shell and allowing affection.

He still doesn’t demand attention or climb into your lap asking for cuddles. That’s simply not Bandit’s style. But he has learned to enjoy gentle affection, especially scratches under his chin, neck, and chest.

He still sometimes flinches slightly when someone reaches to stroke his head, but even that is improving as he learns that a hand reaching toward him can mean love. ❤️

And now? Instead of spending his days hiding under the bed, Bandit joins the rest of the dogs in his foster’s office during the workday. That may seem like a small accomplishment, but for Bandit, it’s huge.

🏡 Bandit’s Perfect Forever Home

Bandit would thrive in a quiet, patient and loving home where nobody expects him to become something he’s not.

His ideal family will understand that his love is subtle. He may not run to the door when you come home or demand to sit in your lap. Instead, he’ll quietly share your space, wander the yard beside you, relax nearby while you work, and eventually lean into those gentle scratches that he’s learned to enjoy.

A securely fenced yard is important, both because Bandit prefers the yard to leash walks and because he likes to wander and explore.

He would especially appreciate a home where his humans are home most of the time and are willing to move at Bandit’s pace.
