Adoptable Dachshund Bean (26-174)- Pending Adoption

💕 Meet Bean!

Female Dachshund | 3 Years Old | 13 lbs.

Bean is a very special little girl who needs a very special person or family. We don’t know what happened in Bean’s past to make the world feel so frightening to her, but underneath all that fear is a sweet little dachshund who is trying very hard to come out of her shell.

Bean isn’t a dog who will run into your arms the first time you meet her. Her love and trust have to be earned — slowly, patiently and completely on her terms. But when she decides she feels safe enough to climb onto the sofa, snuggle beside you and roll over for a tummy rub, you get a glimpse of the loving little dog hiding underneath all that fear. ❤️

🐶 Other Dogs

Bean likes other small dogs and previously lived with four other dachshunds, including Oreo, who is also available for adoption.

When Bean first arrived at her foster home, she was reactive toward the resident dachshunds, but after about a week she became comfortable with them. She now does well with the two dachshunds in her foster home and is also comfortable with Oreo.

Her experience with large dogs and cats is unknown.

👧 Children

Bean should not be placed with young children. Their activity level, movements and noise would likely be overwhelming and frightening for her.

Older children may be considered if they are exceptionally calm, patient and able to understand and respect Bean’s need for space and boundaries.

🦮 Leash & Outdoor Skills

Bean is not leash trained. At this time, her foster has not been able to put a leash on her without causing significant distress, so she has been kept safely indoors.

Learning to tolerate a leash and eventually venture outside will need to happen very slowly and at Bean’s pace.

🏡 House Training & Crate

Bean is not yet house trained.

She is, however, crate trained and may consider her crate a safe place. She willingly uses it for meals and transportation and slept in her crate overnight while recovering from her spay.

For sleeping and relaxing, Bean is comfortable in her crate, on a dog bed or on the sofa.

🍖 Food & Toys

Bean has shown no food or toy aggression.

However, Bean can nip when she becomes frightened or startled. She has nipped at her fosters as well as a veterinary technician when scared. Her future family will need to recognize her signals, avoid forcing physical interaction and allow Bean to initiate contact whenever possible.

🚗 Car Rides

Bean travels safely in a crate in the car. She tolerates car rides but does not particularly enjoy them.

👋 Meeting People

Bean is extremely fearful of unfamiliar people and needs considerable time to develop trust.

It took approximately one month before she allowed her foster to pet her. She generally avoids visitors and does much better when people ignore her and allow her to decide when she is ready to approach.

Even with people she knows, she may become frightened when they approach her. Bean does best when she is allowed to initiate physical contact.

🌸 Personality & Anxiety

Bean is very shy and timid and currently experiences significant anxiety. Many ordinary things can startle her, and when extremely frightened she may urinate, squeal or scream.

She also has an obsessive behavior where she will chase & react to reflections, shadows and beams of light. That is why she is on Trazadone.

Unexpected noises frighten her, although she does not appear particularly bothered by thunderstorms. She is not an excessive barker.

Bean is currently receiving trazodone along with behavioral support to help her feel safer and settle into her environment.

❤️ The Home Bean Needs

Bean is not going to be the right dog for every home — and that’s okay. She needs someone willing to meet her exactly where she is.

Her ideal adopter will be exceptionally patient, gentle and understanding, with a quiet home and realistic expectations. Bean cannot be rushed into trusting people, accepting a leash or becoming comfortable with new experiences. She needs someone willing to celebrate the tiny victories and give her all the time she needs.

Her foster can already see the sweet dog underneath all that fear. When Bean chooses to climb onto the sofa, snuggle close and enjoy pets and tummy rubs, she shows just how much love she has waiting inside. 💗

Bean doesn’t need someone to force her out of her shell. She needs someone who will make her feel safe enough to come out on her own.
