Dachshund Oscar – Pending Adoption, please do not apply!

Adoptable Dachshund Oscar is a 5-year-old, 20-pound Dachshund with soulful eyes and a heart that loves deeply. When he left his family, he cried for over an hour, and for the first few days in foster care he kept trying to get into the car, as if he believed it would take him back home. Oscar bonds hard and loves fully and once he understands he belongs, he settles in beautifully.

He is completely house trained. Oscar will either stand by the door or softly whimper when he needs to go out, and once outside he takes care of things within about 30 seconds. He is also crate trained, just say the word “Crate,” and he will walk right in for a treat.

He wears a harness easily and walks nicely for over a mile, though he can be a little stubborn if he decides he’s ready to head home. He rides well in the car and prefers to sit on your lap the entire time. At night, Oscar’s favorite place is under the covers, where he will stay snuggled up all night long.

Initially, he showed signs of anxiety after leaving his family and would cry for about 15 minutes when left alone. After about three days, once he realized he was safe and staying put, that anxiety decreased significantly. He now settles well, especially when crated with another dog nearby. He is not afraid of thunder or loud noises, but he may bark at normal outdoor sounds – classic Dachshund behavior. More than anything, Oscar seems to fear being left behind again.

With other dogs, Oscar’s behavior depends on the setting. In his previous home, he lived with dogs both big and small. In his foster home, he gets along well with a small poodle — they play, coexist peacefully, and even share a food dish without any aggression. However, when meeting new dogs on leash, he can be suspicious and unsure. He may growl or lunge, and introductions need to be slow and thoughtful. We have not tested him with large dogs recently, and we do not know how he feels about cats.

Oscar is also cautious when meeting new people. He is not shy or timid, but he is suspicious at first. With slow introductions, he will approach to sniff and observe, and he has not shown aggression when given space to adjust. Once he trusts you, he is incredibly affectionate – sitting close, gazing into your eyes, and giving sweet kisses.

He loves toys, but they need to be durable because he will happily demolish softer ones like tennis balls.

Vetting and Medical

In our care, Oscar has received a vet check, vaccines, a dental exam, nails trimming, and heartworm testing and medication. He is in excellent health with good teeth. He weighs about 20 pounds and could likely stand to lose a little weight. Occasionally, he may lose balance when defecating, and while the vet has not found any issues, adopters should be mindful of his back long-term, as is common with the breed.

We depend on donations from caring people, like you, to make a difference in the lives of dogs. As an all volunteer organization, you can rest assured that the donations go directly to help the dogs. Thank you!

Oscar is precious. He is happy going for a walk, content lounging nearby during the day, and overjoyed to curl up under the covers at night. He would thrive in a loving, stable home – ideally one where he can be cherished and included as part of the family. Adoption Fee: $325.

If you believe you could provide a safe and loving forever home for this dog, please fill out an application with the dogs’ name on it.

*Be advised, we have a couple of volunteers processing hundreds of applications. We are unable to call everyone back as we do not have ANY employees. Our dedicated volunteers and foster parents will check references of the applications that appear to be a good match. At that time, if you are chosen, we will contact you to arrange a home visit.

The adoption fee helps to cover costs, as each dog is fully vetted, and treated, as needed to prepare them to move forward in their new life. You pay no fee unless you are chosen to adopt.
