Adoptable Dachshund Big Red (26-137)

🐾 BIG RED 🐾
Dachshund • Male • 12 Years Old • 17 lbs.

If you think your shadow would look better with a Ween shadow attached to it, Big Red is your man! ❤️

Big Red is a handsome senior gentleman with light red, short hair and beautiful long dappled ears. Although he checks the box as a “senior pup,” Big Red knows age is just a number! Grab a leash and watch this boy dance around, wag his tail, and skip out the door with a whole new pep in his step.

🐶 DOG FRIENDLY – BIG & SMALL

Big Red enjoys the company of dogs of all sizes! He currently has no issues living with his foster’s 74 lb. pit mix.

He enjoys running around with the other dogs, wagging his tail and being part of the group, but he isn’t interested in roughhousing, play fighting, tug-of-war, or toys. He’s more of a “let’s hang out together” kind of guy.

Big Red recently attended a local Tally Ween meet-up, where he happily ran around, greeted other dogs, and made lots of new canine and human friends. He likes to sniff new dogs and greet them with a wagging tail and has shown no aggression.

🐱 CAT FRIENDLY

Cats are welcome in Big Red’s world! He will wag his tail, give them a curious sniff, and then go about his business. He does not bark at or chase cats.

👧 CHILDREN

Big Red has been around teenagers and has done well, but he has not been around young children, so a home without small children would be the safest fit for Big Red.

🦮 WALKS ARE HIS FAVORITE!

Want to see Big Red light up? Bring out the leash!

This boy absolutely LOVES going for walks. He gets so excited when he sees his leash and is genuinely disappointed if someone else gets to leave the house without him!

Big Red may pull with excitement at first, but it’s because there are simply so many things to sniff and explore. Walks put a noticeable pep in his step and are one of his favorite activities.

🏡 HOUSE TRAINED

Big Red is house trained and, when his foster is home, will go to the door when he needs to go outside — even during the night.

Because he is an older gentleman, he has had an occasional accident, particularly when left alone for longer than about four hours, but accidents have otherwise been few and far between.

🛏️ SLEEPING & HOME LIFE

Big Red’s crate-training history is uncertain. His foster currently uses a pen in the living room when leaving the house so he has more room to move around.

He initially slept in a crate at night but eventually began barking, so he now sleeps in his foster’s bedroom, either in a dog bed or in bed with his foster.

At the moment, Big Red may get up two to three times during the night to go outside. His foster has noticed that he drinks quite a bit of water and is monitoring his evening water routine. When Big Red wakes, he goes outside, does his business, comes right back in, and settles back to sleep.

❤️ THE PERFECT LITTLE SHADOW

Big Red doesn’t need to be in your lap — he simply wants to know where his person is.

If you’re working in the home office, he’ll follow you and sleep peacefully on the floor. If you’re watching TV, you might find him curled up in a basket of human blankets. If you move to another room, Big Red will eventually come looking for you, find a comfortable dog bed or rug nearby, and settle in for another nap.

He isn’t particularly interested in being on the couch. For Big Red, happiness is simply being in the same room as his human.

When you come home, expect a happy boy with a wagging tail who’s ready to head outside.

🍽️ FOOD & TOYS

Big Red does have some food guarding around other dogs and does not appreciate another dog trying to eat from his bowl while he is eating. Feeding him separately from other pets is recommended.

Toys, on the other hand, just aren’t his thing. He doesn’t seem interested in them.

🚗 CAR RIDES

Big Red gets excited about going for a ride! He rides up front on a dog bed or blanket and will usually settle down and go to sleep as long as his person is nearby.

👋 MEETING PEOPLE

Big Red is friendly and well mannered when meeting new people. He doesn’t jump all over visitors or bark when someone enters the house. Instead, he’ll calmly walk over with his tail wagging, ready for a sniff and some pets.

He’s social without being demanding and is equally comfortable greeting people and dogs or relaxing by himself.

👂 A QUIET SENIOR GENTLEMAN

Big Red is mostly deaf, so thunderstorms and other loud noises don’t seem to bother him.

He isn’t an excessive barker. He may bark when he has been left alone too long or when he’s outside and ready to come back in. He does show some separation-related barking, particularly when left for longer than about four hours.

🌳 HIS IDEAL HOME

Big Red would love a home where his person is around much of the time and he can quietly follow them from room to room. A home with other friendly dogs or cats is perfectly fine with him.

He also loves exploring a backyard and taking in all the interesting smells, so a securely fenced yard would be ideal.

💕 WHY YOU’LL LOVE BIG RED

Big Red is a special, handsome fellow who asks for something pretty simple: a person to follow, a comfortable place to nap, some fur friends if you have them, and plenty of walks to keep that pep in his step.

He’s friendly with people, dogs, and cats. He’s content to snooze nearby while you work, cook, read, clean, or watch TV. He doesn’t need to be the center of attention — he just wants to know that his person is close.

And when that leash comes out? You’ll get to see the youngster still living inside this 12-year-old gentleman. 🐾❤️
