Adoptable Mix Benson is 1 year old and 18-pounds. Benson will be an incredibly loyal, devoted companion. He is quirky, athletic, deeply bonded to his person, and full of personality once trust is earned.
We rescued Benson from the shelter after he was hit by a car. Since then, he has made a lot of progress! He is a one-person dog, deeply loyal and bonded to his chosen human. He doesn’t mind being picked up, hug tightly or covering him with kisses, in fact, he loves it!
Benson’s Forever Home Checklist ✅:
✔️Experienced dog owner
✔️Active, outdoorsy lifestyle
✔️Calm, confident handler
✔️Possibly another friendly dog (with slow intro)
✔️No children nor cats
✔️Comfortable managing reactivity and marking

Crate & House Training Information: Benson is crate trained and does well in the crate. He also uses dog beds for sleeping. Benson is not house trained so additional training might be needed. He marks frequently indoors, so he wears a belly band inside the home.
Other Dogs: Benson lives with other dogs in his foster home and has excellent manners with dogs he knows (especially small dogs). He will play for hours with his chihuahua foster-sibling. He is reactive toward unfamiliar dogs on walks.

On Leash & Outdoors: Benson loves walks, hikes, car rides and adventures but he requires an experienced and physically strong handler. He can walk calmly when nothing exciting is around but is reactive to cars, bikes, people, and dogs when surprised. Benson will lunge, spin, and bark but he can be redirected with focus and short leash handling.
An adopter must be alert, confident, and engaged.

People, Kids, & Cats:
If unfamiliar people attempt to pet him, he may air snap, so a no-children home is required. Benson has not been tested with cats and does have a strong interest in small animals like squirrels and armadillos, so a cat-free home is recommended.
Food, Toys & Travel:
Benson has no issues with people handling his food or toys, but he can be protective of high-value items around other dogs, so management is needed in multi-dog homes. He enjoys car rides and rides quietly, often settling in to nap. For safety, he may need to be crated in the car when traveling with multiple dogs, as he can become over-excited and will attempt to jump out when doors are opened.
Benson’s Quirks (and why we love him):
– Prefers to dump his food out of the bowl before eating
– Collects shoes and slippers and gathers them into a pile every night
– Hides toys and chewies all over the house (including under beds!)
– Never destroys belongings
– Runs like a dressage pony: smooth, elegant, breathtaking
– Jumps for joy at walks and mealtimes

Vetting and Medical
Benson was pulled from the shelter after being hit by a car. He had some pelvic injuries which have resolved after his altercation with a car. In our care, Benson was heartworm positive and will need to take prednisone for one more month (will be provided to adopter). He will need to be re-tested for heartworm in 6 months. He has a fractured right upper canine which has been stable so far. The vets were not able to look in his mouth as he tries to bite them. He did have a fractured vertebrae in his lower back for which he has no pain and has healed well. He now receives sedation prior to veterinary visits and everything has gone well since.
We depend on donations from caring people, like you, to make a difference in the lives of dogs. As an all volunteer organization, you can rest assured that the donations go directly to help the dogs. Thank you!
