Adoptable Dachshund Onyx – Pending Adoption, please do not apply!

Onyx is a 3-year-old, 10-pound Dachshund with the most tender little heart. She isn’t a bold, outgoing dog – she’s the deeply devoted, one-person kind of girl. The type who doesn’t just love you… she chooses you. Once she bonds, you become her whole world.

Onyx came from the Jax 28 and has made wonderful progress, but she is still a sensitive, shy soul who sees the world as a big, overwhelming place. Because of that, she thrives in calm, predictable environments where she can feel safe.

Onyx Forever Home Checklist ✅:
– She MUST have another dog. The other dog should be: confident, easygoing, not possessive of people, willing to share space and attention.
– She needs a quiet single-person home (or possibly a very calm two-person home) with another confident dog and someone who is home often.
– A securely fenced yard is strongly recommended while she builds trust.

She is extremely people-selective and forms a very strong attachment to her person (often a woman). She will follow you everywhere, sit on your lap all day, and stay as physically close as possible – if she could crawl into your skin, she probably would. She isn’t aggressive, but she is fearful, and when she gets scared she may nip if someone she doesn’t trust tries to grab or restrain her. She needs someone patient who understands that trust with her is earned gently and over time.

But for the person who understands shy dogs and finds something incredibly special about being chosen, Onyx will be the most loyal, cuddly, devoted little companion you could ever ask for. She may not love everyone – but the person she bonds with will have her whole heart.

Having another dog in the home is essential for Onyx. She gains confidence from other dogs and feels safest when she has a calm, confident canine companion to look to for cues. She loves being near dogs, eats better when another dog is close by, and will snuggle near them when her person isn’t home. She has no food or toy aggression – quite the opposite – she prefers to eat next to another dog and often tries to share. Her ideal dog sibling is confident, easygoing, and not possessive of people, as Onyx can be very determined about getting as close to her person as possible.

Onyx walks on a leash, but only feels truly secure when walking with her chosen person. She walks behind rather than beside you and is easily startled by sudden noises or movements. She is a serious flight risk if spooked and has slipped out of multiple harness styles, so extra safety precautions are a must. A securely fenced yard is strongly recommended while she builds trust. She should not be walked by someone she doesn’t know well.

Her house training has improved so much, and she’s been accident-free in her foster home for weeks. That said, she takes a long time to potty and gets distracted easily, especially if other people are around. When she did have accidents in the past, they were always on soft surfaces like blankets, beds, or couches, so her adopter will need to be patient, consistent, and understanding as she continues building confidence.

At home, Onyx is crate trained and sleeps in her crate at night without issue. When left in the crate during the day, she may cry or fuss for a bit but eventually settles. She doesn’t really use dog beds – if her person is home, she wants to be on their lap. If not, she will be near the other dog or in her crate. She loves sleeping in bed with her person, but if someone she doesn’t trust approaches, she may jump down to get away.

She rides well in the car, but like with everything else, safety is key. If someone she doesn’t trust opens the door, she may try to bolt, so she must always be secured.

The good news? She isn’t afraid of thunder or loud noises, which is a big win for such a sensitive girl.

Vetting and Medical

In our care, Onyx has received a vet check, vaccines, flea treatments heartworm testing medication and has been spayed. Medically, Onyx takes Apoquel daily for allergies, as she gets very itchy without it.

We depend on donations from caring people, like you, to make a difference in the lives of dogs. As an all volunteer organization, you can rest assured that the donations go directly to help the dogs. Thank you!
