Meet Carmelo!

Carmelo is an absolute sweetheart who is as cute as a button and ready to find his forever retirement or work-from-home companion. At 14 pounds, he might be small, but he has a big dog personality and absolutely loves to interact and play with dogs of all sizes. By nature, he is incredibly loving, likes to sit right next to his people, and thrives on being petted and spoken to softly.

The Perfect Companion

🚗 Carmelo is the ultimate errand buddy! He is great in the car, where he happily sits in the front seat (with or without his foster sibling), naps, and enjoys the ride.

🌳 While he didn’t know how to walk on a leash when he first arrived in foster care, he is doing beautifully now. He absolutely loves going for walks with his foster family and his 15-year-old Beagle foster brother.

🛌 When it’s time to wind down, Carmelo loves his naps. You can find him napping on the couch, in his dog bed, or sleeping soundly all night right in bed with his humans.

Training & Understanding His Past

Carmelo is a resilient boy who likely didn’t have the best start in life, but he is flourishing with patience and love:

🚽 House Training: He is about 90% house broken. He never poops in the house, but he does still mark. He is being neutered tomorrow, and the vet expects the marking behavior to taper off significantly afterward!

❤️ Crate & Safety: He came to his foster family crate-trained, though it seemed he initially used it just to stay safe. Thanks to his growing confidence, he no longer feels the need to hide in a crate and prefers his dog beds or the big bed. He can show anxiety if he thinks he might be hit or yelled at, so a calm, gentle home environment is a must.

🥩 Resource Guarding: Carmelo has a bit of food aggression if he thinks his meal is being taken away. His foster parent simply serves Carmelo his bowl first before serving the resident dog, and everything goes perfectly! He eats wet food twice a day and is a big fan of cheese, snacks, and his favorite stuffed red lobster toy.

🦺 Protective Instincts: Carmelo takes his job as a protector seriously. He will bark loudly at new people and stand in front of his human. Because of this, it is best if he is on a leash or behind a gate when first meeting strangers. When meeting new dogs, a controlled, on-leash introduction works wonderfully.

Bite History: Carmelo does have a bite history. It is mostly when trying to be handled (putting on harness, collar, or being picked up). Foster is now able to put his leash on, but it wasn’t always that way.

Medical Update

🩺 Carmelo has been thoroughly vetted and is in good health! He has received a full vet check, updated vaccines, a dental exam, necessary temporary medications, flea treatments, nail trims, and heartworm testing/preventative. As mentioned, his neuter surgery is scheduled for tomorrow.

We depend on donations from caring people, like you, to make a difference in the lives of dogs. As an all volunteer organization, you can rest assured that the donations go directly to help the dogs. Thank you!

Ideal Home

🏡 Carmelo has some separation anxiety because he simply loves his people too much to be away from them. He will do best with retirees or in a household where someone is home most of the time.
