 Meet Rex 

This handsome little guy is Rex, a mini long-haired chocolate & tan dachshund with the sweetest face and a very special set of needs.

Rex isn’t even a year old yet, weighs 7.5 lbs., but he has some significant neurological issues that make life a little unpredictable. He has good days and bad days, and we haven’t been able to figure out exactly what causes the difference. The good news is that yesterday was a good day, and today is a good day too!

People are understandably going to ask, “What exactly is wrong with Rex?”

What we currently know is that Rex has hydrocephalus and is not a candidate for surgery. He also has a history of seizures and takes medication for them. We are still learning more about his seizures, including how frequently they are occurring, how severe they are, and how he does afterward. We want to be completely honest about what we know—and what we are still trying to understand.

But Rex is so much more than his medical challenges. 

He is a very sweet, gentle, quiet little guy. He eats well and takes his daily medication without any issues. He loves having freedom to move around in a fenced yard and enjoys playing with children.

And Rex is wonderfully social! 

He is good with other dogs AND cats.

Rex is definitely a little different, and he needs someone who is willing to embrace those differences.

Leash walks are not for Rex. Trying to walk him causes him a tremendous amount of stress, so we have stopped forcing the issue. A securely fenced yard is much better for him, and he absolutely LOVES running around and enjoying his freedom.

 Stairs are a major consideration. Rex cannot safely be carried down a flight of stairs. When he is carried, he panics and struggles, which makes it unsafe for both him and the person carrying him. Because of this, a second-floor apartment or any home requiring regular stair use will not be a good fit for Rex. A single-level home with a securely fenced yard would be ideal.

He loves kids! He enjoys playing with them and being part of the fun.

He is good with other dogs and cats, so he can happily share his home with furry friends.

He does not like being picked up or handled. Rex needs someone who will respect his boundaries and let him interact on his own terms.

He uses pee pads. Most days, Rex goes into his pen and uses the pee pad very well. However, he does still have accidents. Because of Rex’s neurological issues and his good days/bad days, we truly believe a forever foster home is the best option for him. He needs someone who understands that his life may look a little different than a typical young dachshund’s.

We would ideally love to find a younger, active person or family with a securely fenced yard, preferably a single-level home, patience, flexibility, and—most importantly—the ability to love Rex exactly as he is.

Rex doesn’t need someone to fix him. 

He needs someone who will understand him, respect his limitations, give him choices, and celebrate those really good days right along with him.

He has so much life and personality in that little body. He deserves a person who can see past his challenges and fall in love with Rex.
