Adoptable Dachshund Mix Rusty – Pending Adoption, please do not apply!

Rusty is a 3-year-old dachshund mix (we suspect some Papillon in there!) weighing about 14 pounds, and he is equal parts playful, affectionate, and charming. He has quickly become a beloved member of his foster family – and it’s easy to see why.

Rusty is a very affectionate pup who loves attention and connection. He’s playful, high-energy, and would thrive in a home that enjoys interacting with their dog – especially playing fetch and engaging with toys. He’s known for giving hugs and will happily jump into your arms when he’s excited. Despite his playful nature, he’s surprisingly clean and grooms himself often.

Rusty’s Forever Home Checklist ✅:
✔️
An active home with people who have time to play, engage, and keep him stimulated
✔️A home with another dog

Dog, Cat & People Friendly:
– Does well with other dogs and enjoys meeting new dog friends
– Likely happiest in a home with another dog, as he does best when he has canine company
– Has done very well with cats and is playful with them
– Timid when meeting new people at first, but warms up with time
– We’re unsure how he’d do with children

Training & Daily Habits:
– Good on a leash and enjoys walks
– Mostly house trained – occasional accidents when he gets very excited
– Somewhat crate trained (did fine during treatment but can be a bit hyper)
– Sleeps either in bed with his foster or on a dog bed next to the bed
– Rides okay in the car but does get motion sickness

Things to Know:
– May show mild food guarding, though it’s unclear if he’s the instigator
– Has some separation anxiety – would struggle more without another dog in the home
– When bored, he may get into mischief (tearing things up), so mental and physical stimulation is important
– Not bothered by loud noises or thunder but will absolutely bark at the vacuum or printer 😄

Vetting and Medical

In our care, Rusty has received vet checks, vaccines, nail trimming, and flea treatments. Rusty was heartworm positive when he came to the rescue, he has finished the necessary treatment but will need to be checked again in 6 months. He is also on monthly heartworm preventatives.

We depend on donations from caring people, like you, to make a difference in the lives of dogs. As an all volunteer organization, you can rest assured that the donations go directly to help the dogs. Thank you!
