Adoptable Dachshund Fletcher – Pending Adoption

Adoptable Dachshund Fletcher likes his brother, but has not been around many other dogs. Although he may need a minute to trust you, he is friendly with people. When he sees them at the vet or goes outside, he barks but has not been aggressive. While we are willing to adopt them together, we feel it could be in their best interest to be adopted individually.

Fletcher was in a situation where he wasn’t socialized, walked on a leash, or exposed to normal life. The good news is, he’s young and is adjusting and learning rapidly! He’s been practicing walking on the leash and is making terrific progress. Fletcher is very curious and loves to explore so he walks at his own speed, usually fast. He simply needs more training. He has only showed anxiety when his brother, Matlock, does. See Matlock’s profile HERE.

Additionally, Fletcher is learning that when company comes over, he has to settle down. While he isn’t normally an excessive barker, when someone walks by or comes in the house, he was barking a LOT. Now, he’s learning that everything is ok, and he doesn’t have to continue alerting the world that there is company in the house. His foster mom says he still needs work on this but the progress is impressive. She has instructed her company to ignore him until he stops, and that is producing the desired results. With a little more time and patience, he will certainly improve even more.

Fletcher is such a smart boy. In a relatively short time, he has become house trained! He does very well, but occasionally has an accident in the house. He does use pee pads.

He is accustomed to sleeping in his crate and even naps there during the day. Fletcher also LOVES to play outside and would really enjoy a fenced yard where he can spend a significant time chasing lizards and playing.

We are not sure how he would respond to another dog in the home. He has done well with his brother and neither of them show aggression (food or toy). Because of his young age and capacity for learning, it’s likely that he would be fine. It would require patience and understanding of dog behavior.

While he has shown some anxiety being transported in the crate, he does calm down relatively quickly. He has only recently been introduced to trips to the vet, so with time, should improve at least somewhat.

He has been excitable and used excessive barking when meeting new people, but is learning rapidly that everything is ok. Treats are useful in helping him calm down faster. Mostly, the vets office, which is it’s own source of stress. As mentioned before, in the home, he’s learning to quiet down better.

In our care, he has received: Vet Check, 1 or more Vaccines, Dental Exam, Spay or Neuter, Nails Trimmed, Flea Treatments, Heart Worm testing and medication
