Meet Dachshund Mix Skippy! This handsome man is approximately 4 months old and weighs in at a whopping 22 pounds. He’s a small standard size dachshund mix. He loves attention, playing with chew toys and playing fetch, running around the yard or going on walks, snuggling on the sofa, and sleeping next to his human. Skippy is just a joy and will be a wonderful fit for a person/family that can give him the time and attention he needs.
Skippy really likes other dogs of all sizes. He gets very excited to see them and wants to play. Since he is so young, he is still working on learning how to play gently with dogs that are smaller than him and learning how to respect other dogs’ personal space. He has gotten along well with the cats in his foster home but can sometimes scare them a bit when he runs after them. Since he is still learning manners and how to properly interact with other animals, it will be important for his future adopter to expect to have to do further training with him if they have other animals. We think Skippy would do fine with younger children as he has loved everyone that he has met, but he hasn’t had any actual experience with meeting young children since coming to the rescue. As he is still working on learning boundaries and how to be gentle, a home without small children (under 5) would be ideal for him. He would do well with older children.
Skippy enjoys his walks and does fairly well on leash but still requires further training in this area as to be expected. As most puppies do, he will sometimes lunge if he sees a person or an animal that he wants to check out. This is a habit that will be able to be broken with consistent training. He has lots of puppy energy, so frequent playtime inside and outside and walks will be necessary to help him burn his energy. Skippy is also doing amazing with his house-training. At only 4 months old, he hardly ever has accidents in the house anymore thanks to all the hard work put in by his foster family. At this time, Skippy is not crate trained. He does not enjoy being crated at all, but this is something that can be changed with proper crate training.
Skippy loves his dog beds but loves cuddles with his humans even more! He prefers to sleep in the big bed with his humans and his ideal forever home will allow him to continue doing this. During the day, he can be found around the house trying out the different dog beds. Skippy does need to be fed in separate areas/rooms for mealtimes as he is not a happy camper if another dog comes up to try to take his food. Separate areas for feeding will prevent any issues like this occurring.
Skippy enjoys a good car ride! He is squirmy in the car so he needs to be well-secured, but he really loves going for a ride. He is very friendly meeting new people and has loved meeting all of his foster family’s neighbors who have all commented on just how sweet he is! He is very enthusiastic when it comes to meeting new dogs and wants to play with them 24/7. Skippy shows some signs of separation anxiety, but luckily he is at a great age for training. As of now, he does bark and cry briefly when he is put in another room by himself or when his foster family leaves the house. He seems to do better when he has a dog friend, but either way he calms down after a while. He’s still a puppy, after all!
