Dachshund Mix Nana is a beautiful, senior, long-hair, dapple in good shape! She’s a standard dachshund mix who weighs 25 pounds but is now on a little diet. Her foster mom says she’s just the biggest sweetheart and they liked each other right away!
Nana enjoys walks on the leash and is good at it. However, walking when there aren’t too many other dogs passing by is important. Nana goes into defensive mode and wants to protect her person.
She LOVES her walks and gets excited immediately and PRACTIALLY puts on her own HARNESS to get ready for them when she sees her foster begin putting on her walking shoes! Her foster mom says it’s a hoot, but she intentionally and cleverly plans for outside times when the other neighborhood dogs aren’t likely to be around.
Sniffing the air, being outside, walking about 20 minutes around the block is a delightful outing for both foster mom and Nana. She doesn’t pull on the leash, she’s a terrific little walking buddy!
One of her very favorite things, besides her human, is to spend time lazing around and sniffing things in the yard. Foster mommy says a safely fenced in area is something that is important for Nana. Another alternative is an enclosed outdoor porch or patio area. She could learn to use a doggie door easily too!
Did we mention that she’s a smart girl? She is fully house trained and will go to the door and “ask” to go outside when she needs to. Her foster mom has been extremely impressed with her and they have had no accidents in the house. She has even been left alone successfully for short time periods while running errands and such without incident or signs of anxiety.
Her foster mom has seen significant improvement in her behavior. Initially, she would bark defensively any time someone passed by the house. NOW, her foster mom is able to get her attention, assure her it’s ok, and snap her right out of it with only her voice commands. Nana is a good communicator and listener!
Nana will do best in a home without other dogs because she desires to be the apple of your eye! It’s unknown as to how she feels about cats, but we are seeking a home without cats or dogs for her.
Although Nana isn’t the dog you’ll want to visit the dog park with, her personality is delightful for anyone who is searching for a companion for themself.
A calm environment where Nana can laze around, sniff the yard, take you for walks, and be your best friend without too many interruptions is exactly what she’s in search of. She’s a smart girl and a great companion for the right individual or possibly a couple.
She’s not food or toy aggressive. Nana isn’t shy, but she is protective. Nana likes to sleep in the bed with her foster mom and will take naps on the floor. She loves to cuddle up with her person – this girl is a faithful and loving dog!
For someone who wants a dog who likes to go for walks, but understands the need to be cautious of other dogs, has an understanding of how to communicate with them and will watch for her cues, Nana could be the very best friend you’ve been searching for!
