Meet Honorary Dachshund Forest! This handsome boy is 10 years old and weighs in at 13 pounds. He is dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and just an all around amazing little guy with quite the story to tell. He has some special needs, such as being blind, that will require a special adopter- but the love he will add to his forever home will be well worth it.
Forest has gotten along with every dog he has met, whether they are smaller than him or bigger than him. He is so curious about other dogs and loves to follow their lead. Due to being blind, he can sometimes not be the best about respecting other dog’s personal space at first since he can’t see them and goes off of their smell so it would be important for other dogs to be okay with that.
Once he makes friends with other dogs, which happens very quickly, he just loves following them around and doing whatever they do. We are not sure how Forest would do with cats since he has not been exposed to them while in his foster home, but we think he would do fine with them. Forest would do fine in a home with children as well, he is very sweet and loving towards everyone no matter their age.
Due to his lack of vision, Forest does not do the best on walks but he does absolutely love a short “sniff stroll!” He also loves walking around the neighborhood in a doggy stroller and getting some nice, fresh air. Forest loves the backyard and could spend hours just walking around exploring every inch of it over and over again.
Despite being blind, Forest has learned to adjust and learned his surroundings extremely well in his foster home. Forest will have weeks where he seems to be fully potty trained but then has weeks where he does not and we’re not quite sure if it is age-related or blindness-related but either way, he does wonderful with wearing belly bands when need be and does not ever try to take them off.
Forest is crate-trained and playpen trained. He can be very vocal in the crate and the pen at first, so giving him a busy bone to help him relax has been common practice in his foster home. Due to how vocal he can be at times, an apartment would not be a good fit for sweet little Forest. Forest loves his dog beds and will jump from dog bed to dog bed throughout the day for his little naps. In his foster home, Forest sleeps in his own room with his dog bed. His foster parents have tried having him sleep with them but he will wake up in the middle of the night and walk off the bed, so giving him his own room has been much safer! If his adopter really wanted him to sleep on the big bed with them, some safety precautions like bed bumpers would be important. Forest has shown no toy or food aggression while in his foster home, he is always happy to share whatever he has with the other pups. Forest absolutely loves squeaky toys and crinkly toys and has the time of his life playing with them!
When it comes to car rides, Forest can be quite vocal at first but once he gets into the groove of things he quiets down and usually sleeps. He went on a long trip up to Tennessee with his foster parents and they said after about 20 minutes, it was like he wasn’t even there! Forest is friendly meeting new people and new dogs, although if he’s in a new environment he may be very barky but he has never been mean or aggressive. He just gets confused easily due to being blind and it seems as though he copes with the confusion by barking. He is not shy at all and shows no signs of anxiety. When being left alone at the house, he will bark for a bit and then quiet down and stay quiet for the rest of the time.
Vetting
In our care, Forest has received all of the following: Vet check, Dental exam, Medication (temporary – like for acute infection), Medication (permanent – like for seizure treatment), Spay or Neuter, Nails trimmed, HeartWorm testing and medication, Major Dental (cleaning and removal). He also saw the specialist for his eye and they are so pleased with his recovery!
Forest came to us from the shelter after being found as a stray in awful condition. His one eye was in such bad shape that they didn’t know if it could be saved or not. However with lots of vet appointments and medications, it has healed amazingly and no longer gives him many of the problems it was previously giving. He does still, and likely will always, require some eye medications. Currently, one is 3 times a day and the other two are once every other day. All in all, his medications will cost around $40 or less per month. He will also require seeing an animal eye care specialist every 6 months to one year for the rest of his life due to his different eye conditions. He does amazing with his eye drops and takes them with no issues.
We appreciate any additional help with medical bills for the dogs of Low Rider.
Honorary Dachshund Forest – 10 yr, 13 lbs
Forest is the sweetest boy who was dealt a very unfortunate hand, but he hasn’t let that take his happiness away! He deserves the absolute best forever home to live out his golden years with people who will love and adore him despite his differences and his little quirks. In his forever home, he will require continued medication (see above) and follow-up every 6 months with the specialist. He’s not the best fit for an apartment as he is quite vocal until he settles into a routine. He is blind, and therefore needs someone around most of the time. He’s good with gentle kids and other dogs. His love and affection make him so worth any extra effort to care for him. Adoption fee $150
If you believe you could provide a safe and loving forever home for this dog, please fill out an application with the dogs’ name on it.
*Be advised, we have a couple of volunteers processing hundreds of applications. We are unable to call everyone back as we do not have ANY employees. Our dedicated volunteers and foster parents will check references of the applications that appear to be a good match. At that time, if you are chosen, we will contact you to arrange a home visit.
The adoption fee helps to cover costs, as each dog is fully vetted, and treated, as needed to prepare them to move forward in their new life. You pay no fee unless you are chosen to adopt.
