About Low Rider & Why We’re Raising Money!

Low Rider Dachshund Rescue of Florida is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. We’re a small organization with foster homes all over Florida. Each rescue is fully vetted and receives as needed – microchip, vaccines, spay or neuter, blood and fecal tests, heartworm meds, other medication. Many receive life saving and life altering surgeries, like the current dogs shown below.

Low Rider Dogs

February and March, along with regular vet visits for Low Rider dogs, we had major surgeries for Toby and Scarlett. April and May brings us Pattycake, Willie, Walker, and Lewis. All who are in dire need of major medical treatment, medications, and/or surgeries.

Pattycake has had the first of two luxating patella surgeries. EACH leg surgery cost is about $3500. Pattycake is a sweetheart who is already doing well recovering from the first surgery! She will be spayed in between the two leg surgeries. She’s a young, sweet female that would otherwise not lead a normal and pain-free life without the surgeries.

In the middle of April we received Willie and Walker.

Willie came to us paralyzed in the back and we assumed it was IVDD. However, after his MRI we discovered he has a condition called Meningomyelitis. He is currently on medication to reduce swelling and pain while he is awaiting a physical therapy evaluation. Of course, the therapies are not inexpensive and include water treadmill and likely laser therapy for weeks or even months. He’ll be feeling better soon and we hope to give him back the ability to walk.

As for Walker, this poor soul was also evaluated by a neurologist and it was determined that he has a brain condition. An MRI was done and his condition is called Chiari’s Malformation which has made him suffer most of his 8 year life with a SPLITTING headache. The problem has created a secondary condition of spinal fluid backup called Syringomelia. There is no cure or surgery for Walker but medications will provide relief, probably for the first time in his life!

Which brings us to Lewis, who arrived on Friday JUST before he was scheduled to be euthanized at 5pm! He was a stray and is not using his back legs. We are setting up his evaluations and tests but it is believed that he may have been hit by a car and has a broken pelvis and/or leg in addition to not being able to stand. His pain is being managed and he is being well loved and cared for. We expect to learn more this week.

One way or another for each of these dogs, others already in our care, and others soon to come – the cost of evaluations and potential surgery or treatments is looming! We find ourselves at a critical low for funds due to the overwhelming amount of dogs needing our care. We are maintaining approximately 60 dogs in foster care. Some are forever fosters, others will be adopted when they are ready.
