Adoptable Dachshund Rusty – ADOPTED

Adoptable Dachshund Rusty

Adoptable Dachshund Rusty is an extremely lovable and handsome little man and has great energy. He is very healthy and active and will make someone a wonderful companion for many years! He has a delightfully quirky personality and is a fun little guy with a constantly wagging tail!

Anxious behavior is common, at least for an initial time period, with rescue dogs. Changing from a home they have known is difficult, some have experienced much greater trauma.

Rusty definitely shows signs of separation anxiety. Currently, he barks, licks his paws, likes to run a circle for extended periods of time, or will chew on his person’s shoes or other items if his person is not visible to him for a time. He will seem somewhat panicked if his person is in sight but in another room or outside.

This little guy likes riding in the car! He’ll want to be on your lap while driving which for some might be a concern. His foster secures him while driving.

Adoptable Dachshund Rusty

In order to self soothe he exhibits a variety of behaviors. He barks, licks his paws, likes to run a circle for extended periods of time, or will chew on his person’s shoes or clothes if his person is not visible to him for a time. He is always close by and prefers to sit on his person if able or cuddle very close. This includes things like the bath or shower as he will attempt to get in with his person. He’d likely try that with a pool, as a word of caution, since he has no fear of water and wants to be near his person at all times.

With some reassurance and a good routine, his anxiety should lessen with time in his forever family. He’s happiest when his person/family is around most of the day. He is extremely intelligent and understands several commands. House training is a process that many rescues must go through but this smart pup is doing well with minimal accidents. As a matter of fact, he does so well, his foster officially classifies him as house trained!

About Rusty

Rusty does bark at many things – mostly lizards and squirrels and random neighborhood sounds. He responds to clapping and will stop on command although somewhat briefly if it is a lizard or other prey he is after. Cats are not a good match as they would trigger his prey drive, which is pretty strong!

Adoptable Dachshund Rusty

Rusty is generally very friendly but sometimes can come off as aggressive with strange people or animals initially as he is scoping out the situation and protecting his person. With assurance, he is very friendly and likes people. He seems to do well with new dogs once he realizes they are not a threat to himself or his person. Generally, he walks well on a leash and is very energetic, however, because of his protectiveness of his person, he can come off as aggressive to other people and dogs encountered on walks. He has been working on it and needs someone to work with him on this over time.

He has not demonstrated food or toy aggression with his foster. He does LOVE his toys though and they must be nearly indestructible. Rusty has a tendency to want to chew things that belong to his person on rare occasions, so it’s recommended not to leave shoes/sandals or other items in (or on top of) areas he can reach.

Rusty

Although untested around small children, he loves to play and is very active and energetic, and would do VERY well with older children. Rusty sleeps well at bedtime in his crate with his dog bed, and crates well. It’s likely he would enjoy sleeping in bed with his person as well, as he does like to cuddle.

Rusty

Rusty is 6 years old and weighs 22 pounds!
